How Social Security can affect your Medicare premium

Most people who are already receiving Social Security benefits are protected from an increase in Medicare premiums due to the “hold harmless” provision included in the Social Security Act.  This provision provides that Social Security benefits can’t decrease because of an increase in Medicare premiums.  But those who are eligible but haven’t yet started collecting Social Security don’t enjoy that protection, unless they start their benefits by November 2016.  This article by Mary Beth Franklin of InvestmentNews explores why starting Social Security benefits to avoid the Medicare premium increase may not be the best course of action.  Read more here.
