Social Security and Marriage

There are many financially beneficial reasons to get married, aside from the emotional reasons. Social Security offers many benefits to spouses that are not available to single recipients. One of the biggest benefits is being able to receive benefits based off of your spouse’s income, a huge boon if they happen to have made more than you in your lifetime. You are also eligible for survivor benefits in the event of your spouse’s death. These benefits kick in in as little as one year of marriage.
