Yes, the debt fight could delay Social Security checks. Here’s how.

There’s a theory pinging around that says no matter what happens with the debt ceiling, Social Security beneficiaries will keep getting their checks on time. Social Security is a trust fund that brings in more money than it pays out, so the theory holds that even if the United States can’t legally borrow more money, benefits must continue until the trust fund runs out. Evidence strongly suggests that theory is wrong...Read More

  1. It is now New Years Eve (December 31, 2019) and I get paid in 2 days. Hoping my money comes in by that time. I have bills due by the 1st of every month and now my payments will be late.
I am really hoping that my money gets put into my account soon.

  2. My social security check didn’t come on December 3rd 2019 I called they say they mailed out checks but when ask to speak to someone they hung up the phone I have been waiting for them to Set up my direct deposit for six months they have given me the run around so I’m still receiving paper checks is now the December 9 2019 still nothing I’m going to call tomorrow this is terrible what America has turned into nothing seems to function properly with Donald trump I won’t be surprised if he Rob America blind and bankrupt the country

  3. SSI has not sent direct deposit this month. Nor did they send written correspondence explaining why. Labor day is tomorrow so I must suffer anxiety next 2 days to wait until office is open. SSI actions are insensitive. This constant excuses to cut benefits without warning exacerbates my anxiety disorder. I reported being abused by criminal investigators and suddenly everything comes under fire, even my SSI. I dont feel safe reporting being abused. In investigators retaliate and camoflauge it as coincidental lawful acts. I dont want to end up homeless. Why does SSI always mess with my benefits? I need them to survive. They cause too much anxiety.

  4. September 5th, 2017 and still no SSDI direct deposit to my son’s account. No idea why as it has always been direct deposited there before by the first of every month. We have received no letters in the mail telling us that they need more information from us, a redetermination, or that there has been a cancellation of his benefits or anything. Any idea why this is happening on any other front or word from others that this is happening to?

    • My deposit on my walmart money card has been delayed for four days now and I don’t know why either. Like you, I usually get it before or on the first and still nothing today.

  5. I’m wondering when any of the people here who posted about their payments being late got their payments? Mine was suppose to be on the third of this month (may 2017) and its still not there

    • My Social Security did not post as usual this month of July. But of course nothing can be reported for 7-10 business days. What is going on. Why do the people on Social Security have to guess and see if the payments are going to be on time due to the political process. My rent does not wait and see,.

      • I’m right there w/ you Brenda. Still no check…..? Glad to see I’m not the only one. Misery loves company.

          • Has anyone who has commented here received their direct deposits yet? As of this morning my father’s deposit still has not been made. I wanted to give SSA the benefit of the doubt with the holiday but SSA’s recording (at their 800 #) says deposits typically made on the 3rd should have been made June 30, 2017 to account for the holiday.

        • I haven’t received my daughters social security check this month is it due to the Fourth of July ?? When can I call them and ask how many days should I wait ?

          • After 90 minutes on call with SSA I learned that my father’s situation is unique (returned mail resulted in suspension of account). Now that’s sorted, money will be deposited. This doesn’t help other folks here.

My recommendation would be 1) try calling a bit later in the day bc wait times right now are about 30 minutes on hold, or 45 minutes for a call-back; 2) I would only ever wait the minimum # of days to call and inquire.

If, like my dad, your deposit is typically on the 3rd it should’ve been deposited on the 30th of June (again, according to SAA recording at their 800#). The gentlemen – yes, two of them – with whom I spoke said the 3rd was not considered a holiday, and so, it has now been 3 business days (3rd, 5th, and 6th) since deposits should have been made.

The 3-7 days lag time makes sense for mailed checks, not for direct deposits.

          • On the My social security site it shows that I was issued a back pay installment by paper check on July 3rd and I have yet to receive it. Yet, they send me a notice of lawyers fees and my past due (back pay) amount on the 6th and I got it the 7th.

      • This is the first time mine has been late and I’m freaking out. The rent has to be paid on Wednesday and no sign of anything. I have no idea what is going on. I don’t watch the news because of PTSD and now I’m afraid that I’ve done something wrong. No notifications or calls saying my disability was not coming anymore. Nothing…..I have no help. So sorry for you ALL but glad I found this too. This is scary.

        • Kristina:

We know of nothing that has changed or is happening with disability payment schedules. We suggest you contact your local Social Security office immediately and request clarification on your situation.

  6. Is this a America thing only? Or is Canada involved as well? My disability money should have been paid to me on the 24th of February but it still has not come in. I need that money badly. I have a surgery coming on the 27th this month (before I will get March’s payment) and while some is covered another part might not be. Thank god I live with my mom though, since I give her “room and board” rather than a apartment

    • Ashley:

Thank you for the question! We have checked with the U.S. Social Security Administration, and they’re reporting no changes in payment schedules for the current month. In Canada, if your are eligible to receive U.S. Social Security benefits and are not receiving them, you might want to contact a local office (see https://www.ssa.gov/foreign/canada.htm for contact information). Please take note that this website is not part of the Social Security Administration (SSA), but rather an independent Social Security information website sponsored by The AMAC Foundation. We wish you well.

      • Is there a plm with April third deposit because I didn’t get mine. I never got a letter stating if I got stopped or it’s being delay….

        • I was told there was an system update over the weekend that it’ll be available tonight midnight 1am? Or tomorrow midnight 1am. Pls explain…

          • Valarie:

Thanks you for contacting the AMAC Foundation via the Social Security Report website. Please note that we are not affiliated in any way with the Social Security Administration, and typically are not involved in any operational aspects of the SSA. Matters like system updates and payment scheduling are internal to the SSA, so we are unable to shed any light on your question. Our information sources did not address any weekend processing interruptions, so we have nothing to add in response to your question. We hope that the problem as self-corrected at this point.

Again, thank you for contacting us.

    • I was wondering is May effected. My father hasn’t received his benefit and it was suppose to be May 3…

  7. My daughter’s disability check didn’t arrive. It’s the first time this has happened, and it has happened at the worst possible time. We are in danger of losing our home. This is very scary.

        • Joan, Please take note that this website is not part of the Social Security Administration (SSA), but rather an independent Social Security information website sponsored by The AMAC Foundation. Nevertheless we have searched the SSA’s official website and blog, as well as other resources we are familiar with and have found no advisory about late payment of benefits for the month of February. We get this question from time to time about benefit payments not arriving on schedule, and have found that while these events happen occasionally, the payments nearly always appear within a day or so of the expected date. Especially when benefit checks are received by mail, they are subject to any delays in U.S. Postal Service delivery. I hope you have, by now, received your benefit payment. Please don’t hesitate to contact us again if needed.

  8. I applied for retirement benefits on October 10, 2016 and my birthday is June 17th and wondering when do I expect to receive the first payment.

    • Thank you for contacting the AMAC Foundation’s Social Security advisory Service. In answer to your question, you should receive your first check on or about the third Wednesday of December (December 20th), assuming you are eligible to receive benefits. You can view the SSA benefits payment schedule at https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2017.pdf. Benefits are paid the month following the first month of eligibility after filing.

Again, think you for your question.

  9. I do my mom’s finances and her SS check is late as well. Since many of her big bills get automatically withdrawn, this will cause a huge problem of being overdrawn! The latest she has received her check is on the 3rd of the month. Normally, it is either the 1st or 2nd. She couldn’t use the ATM today and found out her check has not reached the bank.

    • Paula,
For information, SS’s current standard retirement benefit payment schedule is to pay on either the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month, depending upon a person’s birth date. Since you say that your Mom usually gets her benefit payment by the 1st or 2nd, I assume that she’s collecting SSI, because SSI is normally paid on the 1st. If she has been collecting only regular Social Security retirement benefits since before May 1997, or if she collects both SSI and regular SS retirement benefits, her benefits should be paid by Social Security by the 3rd of the month. If any of these are the case, I suggest you call you local Social Security office right away and advise them that your Mom’s benefit payment has not been deposited into her account. Please contact us at [email protected] if we may assist further.

  10. I am a rep. payee for someone and have always had her SSI/SSDI checks direct deposited between the 25th and 28th of the month even though her checks aren’t due until the 1st and 3rd of the month. For whatever reason they did not direct deposit the checks this time. First check came in on the 1st, still waiting on 2nd check to deposit or show up in the mail. Any idea what is going on?

    • Nathan, we are not aware of any delay in SSI or SSDI payments, and I’ve not been able to find any such notices at Social Security’s website. I suggest you wait until Wednesday and if you still have not received the 2nd check, call your local Social Security office and ask them to check the payment status. Feel free to email us directly at [email protected] if you have any further questions. Russ Gloor, NSSA Certified Social Security Adviosr, The AMAC Foundation, Inc.

  11. Does the payment for September reflect the September benefit or the August benefit? When moving from one bank to another for Direct Deposit, trying to figure out when the change will go into effect.

    • Gail:

Thank you for your question submitted via our Social Security Report website.

Social Security payments are paid to you in the month following the month for which the payment is due. For example, payments for January are delivered in February, and are paid on either the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday of the month, depending upon what day of the month you were born. If you were born between the 1st and the 10th, your benefit is paid on the 2nd Wednesday, born between the 11th and 20th you will be paid on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and if you were born between the 21st and the end of the month your benefit is paid on the 4th Wednesday. If you have additional questions, please feel free to email us at [email protected].
