Could there be a COLA increase in 2018?

Although it’s way too early to know for sure, according to this Motley Fool article by Todd Campbell there are signs that next year we could see a 2.56% Cost Of Living Adjustment in our Social Security checks.  We won’t know for sure until after the 3rd quarter of this year what, if any, COLA increase is on the horizon,   And given that healthcare costs continue to rise, Medicare premium increases could take a big bite out of any increase we may get.  Click here to read this article which explores the 2018 COLA possibilities.

  1. Dear Carol: So sorry to hear about your situation and your son. I can’t answer for your son, but as to the BS provided by Senator Davis — I wrote to him with a suggestion — you will never see this law passed, and don’t count on your politicians pursuing the matter, either.

yet another pitfall in, “The Great American Dream.” I am also affected by WEP to the tune of $420.00 per month!!. And please, if you or your friends are members of AARP, boycott them!! They have been contacted several times on this issue (and the GPO) and refuse to take a stand for us. They do not need our support.

  2. Is there any good reason to penalize to hard working Americans from receiving Social Security from the death of a spouse? This WEP rule is truly unfair my husband served our country for 40 years in the U.S. Army and because I worked my life for the federal government and receive a measly $143 a month instead of benefits from my husbands Social Security. Just because he passed does not mean our bills for living day to day goes away. When my husband passed away my income went down $3,000.00 a month because of all the government rules.

I was told by a representative that this WEP law was to help those who are less fortunate, I guess the government would rather put us hard workers in with the those who are probably not even citizens of America and don’t want to work. I an so sick of all this government bull. What happened to those who worked hard all their lives?

Yes again the Social Security System is broke, my son worked 21 years and then his mental condition went down hill and he tried for over three years to get SSDI and was turned down at least five times until he could not stand it any longer and shot himself in he head in December 2016 and killed himself. This entire system sucks for Americans and helps illegal people who come here for welfare.

O how great is America when we cannot even help our own.

    • Carol:
Thank you for your comments. We understand your point, and would like to point out that The Social Security Fairness Act of 2017 has been introduced in the 115th Congress, calling for a repeal of the government pension offset (GPO) and windfall elimination provisions (WEP) currently in effect. The Act was introduced by Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) as H.R. 1205 in the House, and by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) as S.915. You can track the progress of these two bills via https://www.govtrack.us or https://www.congress.gov.

      • I can guarantee that this law is yet another ‘political lip service’ by a politician. It will never pass, and Davis is probably only promoting this because of the problems he is having with the Teachers Retirement in Illinois.

    • Juanita:

Thank you for your question. If you are drawing Social Security, then yes any Cost of Living Adjustments would increase that amount. That’s true regardless of age, if the person is in fact drawing a monthly benefit. If I haven’t interpreted your question correctly, please feel free to contact us at the AMAC Foundation office (888-750-2622) or email us at [email protected].

    • Yes, JB, if you are receiving Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) any COLA increase for 2018 will also apply to your benefit payment. Many, if not most, recipients of the last COLA increase saw it consumed by an increase in Medicare premiums, but since you haven’t given your age we’re not sure if that is why yours was “less than stated” (which was 0.3%). Please contact us via email at [email protected], or by phone at 1.888.750.2622, if you would like to discuss your Social Security benefit in more depth.
