Social Security’s Online Services

The Social Security Administration has been transitioning to improved online services for several years now, and the list of services available online continues to grow. From applying for benefits online, to requesting a replacement card, to obtaining estimated benefits and lifetime earnings statements, a plethora of services are now available to all those who are even only moderately computer-literate. The key that opens the door to all these services is a “My Social Security” online account, which you can personally set up at www.ssa.gov. Once you have set the account up, all of Social Security online services become available to you, as explained by the SSA’s Norfolk, VA based public affairs specialist Lizna Odhwani, appearing in The Suffolk News-Herald. • Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments normally made on the 3rd of the month are always made on the third of the month, unless the 3rd falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case the payment is made on the first business day prior. In cases where the 3rd falls on the day following a holiday, the payment is made as scheduled on the 3rd, even though your bank and Social Security may be closed for normal business on the preceding day. Social Security and SSI payments are made electronically (without human intervention). The available of funds is, however, a function of your bank’s policy. Bad weather notwithstanding, your payment will be at your bank on the scheduled day.
