Your 2% COLA increase will start in 2018

After several years of no and very low COLA increases, Social Security beneficiaries will finally see a decent 2% raise in their benefits starting in January of next year.  While certainly not a windfall, the average retired worker getting $1,377 can expect their January check to be about $1,404 per month.  Spouses and disabled workers can expect a similar raise in benefits.  This Queens (NY) Chronicle article by Anthony Medina explains all about the coming COLA increase and what it means to Social Security recipients.  Click here to read more.

The exact date for issue of the 2019 COLA-adjusted benefit amounts has not yet been published, other than that beneficiaries will be notified in December. MySocialSecurity account holders will likely be able to see their new amount before receipt of the actual letter (although as of today the new amounts aren’t posted.) According to Kiplinger.com,”You usually receive a notice in the mail in early December with your new benefit amount, but this year most Social Security beneficiaries will also be able to see their COLA notice online through their mySocialSecurity account.
