Social Security and Medicare Parity Act Reintroduced

Yesterday, Representative Mark Takano (D-CA) reintroduced the Social Security and Medicare Parity Act, which would require the Social Security Administration to treat all married same-sex couples fairly. After the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Windsor v. United States, most federal agencies were able to recognize all married same-sex couples, regardless of where they live.  However, several agencies—including the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Copyright Office—were unable to recognize couples living in states without marriage equality because of a quirk the language of their statutes.
