What dependent benefits are available for children of older parents?

Many people wind up having children later than they used to, partly because we’re living longer. But late-life kids may qualify for Social Security benefits along with their parents.

Actor Kelsey Grammer is a great example of a late-life parent who could qualify, points out Chad Terry, a BlackRock director of retirement and investment education who spends a lot of his time explaining the complexities of Social Security.

Grammer had the last two of his six children “well into his 50s, during his fourth marriage,” Terry says. “Once he files for his Social Security retirement benefit, the younger ones will be entitled to dependent benefits because they are under 18 years old, and their mother will receive a benefit until they reach age 16.” Read more…
