How soon can I apply for a Social Security number as a J-1 exchange visitor working in the United States?

Answer: Before you apply for a Social Security number and card, we suggest you:

  • Be in the United States for at least 10 day; and
  • Report to your program sponsor (You must be in active status for at least two days before you apply.).
