Reviving Medicare’s Flailing Prevention Program

President Kennedy, in 1963, designated May as the time to honor older Americans and on April 30th President Obama issued a proclamation to mark the beginning of the celebratory month, themed Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow.  In keeping with the theme, he also called attention to Medicare’s groundbreaking preventive health program, established via the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and its benefits for seniors. The attention is timely as most policy discussions to date have largely ignored the initiative and Medicare’s wellness program is well, quite unwell. It fails to follow basic public health principles, targets risks ineffectively and likely offers little to no return on a substantial, immediate investment. Read more…
