Social Security, a critical legislative landmark, has remained an important part of our society since it became law 80 years ago this month. Created to combat unemployment at the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law in 1935 and called the measure a “patriotic act.” It was one of several New Deal programs designed to get Americans out of the economic crisis of the Depression-era, guaranteeing an income for the unemployed and protecting senior citizens from an impoverished old age.
