The First Chairman for Social Security
John G. Winant was the first chairman of the Social Security Board serving under President Franklin Roosevelt. He served in this position from August 1935 until February 1937 taking one month off in October 1936 in order to support Social Security as a private citizen while it was under attack by Republicans of the time. Winants contributions to the fledgling program were consequential to its success as part of Roosevelts New Deal program. He is one of the most important characters in the story of how one of the most important social welfare systems in our country was created.
