How Important is Sleep for Seniors?

Eight hours per night has long been touted as the magic number, so much so that our entire society runs off a custom schedule with this guideline in place. However, more thorough research in recent years has shown that sleep needs vary among individuals, and our understanding of REM cycles and circadian rhythms has quickly been becoming more mainstream. Another myth that has become prevalent is that the need for sleep wanes as a person grows older. This came to be because as a child grows, they generally require less sleep as they progress from infant into adulthood. Once a person reaches the point where 7-9 hours per night is adequate, however, the length that they require stops decreasing. Studies have continually shown over the course of the past few years that getting adequate sleep is integral to bodily health.
