Setting up your online Social Security account helps avoid identity theft

Social Security’s online services include giving you the ability to set up a secure, personal account known as “My Social Security”.  Having that account gives you access to all the information Social Security has about, gives you a way to estimate your benefits at different ages, and even the ability to apply for retirement benefits online.  But there’s another good reason that everyone, even those not yet ready to apply, should set up their My Social Security account:  it prevents anyone else from setting up a fraudulent account in your name, because only one account per person is allowed.  This CBS News MoneyWatch article by Ray Martin describes how setting up an online Social Security account fights ID theft.  Click here to read more.
