Staying on Top of Your Social Security Records

These days, the Social Security Administration (SSA) mails benefit statements only to workers age 60 and over who aren’t receiving Social Security benefits and do not yet have my Social Security accounts. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get one if those criteria do not apply to you. In fact, you can–and should–routinely check the accuracy of the records being kept on your behalf by SSA, and you can do this online at any time at ssa.gov. Social Security’s website explains that “You can get your personal Social Security Statement online by using your my Social Security account. If you don’t yet have an account, you can easily create one. Your online Statement gives you secure and convenient access to your earnings records. It also shows estimates for retirement, disability and survivors benefits you and your family may be eligible for.”
