“WEP” and “GPO” can reduced or eliminate Social Security benefits
In this Chicago Tribune article by Elliot Raphaelson, the author describes how certain other pensions, most notably those by public service employees of a number of States, are surprised to find that,because their main career in public service didn’t contribute to the Social Security program they aren’t entitled to a full Social Security benefit for other years they worked and paid into Social Security. This is because of two provisions of the Social Security Act called the Windfall Elimination Provision (or WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (or GPO), both of which can severely reduce or even eliminate Social Security benefits they might otherwise be entitled to.
