A new wave of Social Security scams coming?
Here we go again. With the announcement last week that about 140,000 Social Security numbers may have been compromised by a data breach at industry giant Capital One, the Social Security Administration is warning that a new wave of scams is probably coming. These scams are overshadowing the older IRS scams, and while they’ve been around for a while the Social Security scams are expected to get new life because of the Capital One breach. Social Security advises everyone – beneficiaries and workers alike – to exercise extreme caution and wariness. Social Security doesn’t contact people by phone unless you have initiated the transaction, so don’t fall for calls from anyone claiming to be from Social Security and saying that there’s trouble with your Social Security number or account.
