Last Minute Shoppers Be Alert…the Online Marketplace Can be Risky!

We’re down to the wire on Christmas shopping, and smartphones offer a convenient way to avoid the crush of that last minute dash to the mall. In fact, some sources report that about a third of all holiday shopping is done conveniently and remotely via these amazing hand-held devices. It’s so easy…and that’s what the crooks and scammers are counting on!

In an article posted on newyork.cbslocal.com by CBS2’s Charlie Cooper, the risk involved with much of the online shopping world is highlighted. Cooper reports on comments from Cisco Security Business Group’s Dov Yoran, who notes that ““The more transactions we do on our phones, the more it draws the cyber criminals and folks to go where the money is.” In fact, Yoran reported that Cisco has tracked “75 different organizations or social media groups that were openly trading information,” finding that credit card, social security, and other information is involved this trading process.

The key, of course, is to be cautious about the attractive offers of prizes and fantastic deals, and practice due diligence religiously before you enter a transaction. Cooper’s post, which you can access here, offers additional thoughts on protecting your self online.
