Is Social Security safe from the courts?
This opinion piece by Nancy Altman of the liberal Social Security Works suggests the courts may be hostile to the Social Security program. She proposes little evidence and simply notes how the current court is more conservative than ever. Altman also cites some quotes from various GOP lawmakers over the years that mentioned Social Security reform. Her leftist organization does not propose any meaningful reform for Social Security’s financial problems. Instead she closes this liberal op-ed with a suggestion to expand the Supreme Court and for term limits for the justices. Full piece in The Hill here.
Unlike Social Security Works, the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) believes Social Security must be preserved and modernized. This can be achieved with modest changes in cost of living adjustments and the retirement age, and no tax increases on workers if reform is enacted soon. AMAC advocates for “The Social Security Guarantee Act,” a bipartisan compromise using portions of bills introduced by former Rep. Johnson (R-TX) and current Rep. Larson (D-CT) and merging them with the Association’s own well researched ideas. One component is Social Security PLUS, a new, voluntary plan that would allow all earners to have more income available at retirement. This component is intended to appeal especially to younger workers. AMAC is resolute in its mission that Social Security be preserved and modernized and has gotten the attention of lawmakers in DC, meeting with a great many congressional offices and their staffs over the past several years.
