WEP & GPO: The twins that eat Social Security checks - AMAC & Federal News Network

Mike Causey, a senior correspondent for Federal News Network, writes about federal pay and benefit issues.  He tackles what he calls the twin villains in this piece– the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO).  He explains the birth of these provisions in the 1970s.  Several bills have been introduced in Congress nearly every year since the “evil twins” (as Causey calls them) were enacted.  He notes the time may have never been better for reform or repeal than now.  Full piece here and check out the state by state listing of impact on retirees at this link here.

Note:  AMAC has fought for WEP & GPO repeal or reform for years but prefers it be part of a more comprehensive overhaul of Social Security to make the program financially solvent over the long term.  Repeal or reform does cost the Social Security Trust Fund money.  Many experts tend to agree that the GPO is the more onerous of the two in how it “penalizes.”  AMAC’s Social Security Guarantee is here:
