SSA Commissioner Saul’s Letter to Congress
In a letter to key members of Congress, Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul offered insight into the status of Social Security operations today. Although his FY 2021 appropriation provides more than the previous year, it is nevertheless smaller than he originally requested to improve Social Security’s customer service. Fact is, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic negative effect on Social Security’s ability to provide service excellence to beneficiaries. The backlog of open cases has grown and the time to resolve open cases has also increased, a condition not likely to improve without the additional resources requested. The letter from the Commissioner further details actions taken and plans to improve, providing considerable insight into Social Security current operational status.
