Bill Hopes to Extend Social Security for Students to Age 26
U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) yesterday introduced legislation to extend Social Security benefits to students who are survivors, children of disabled workers, and eligible grandchildren of retired workers. The bill, titled “Helping Students Successfully Overcome Adversity and Rise (SOAR) with Social Security Act” is designed to continue benefits past the current age 19 cut-off for full-time students. Citing “unique and challenging hardships” that stand in the way of college education for students in families facing financial hardship, Van Hollen and Sanders noted support from key quarters, including Social Security Works, Strengthen Social Security Coalition, Generations United, National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP), and Blue Future.
