You probably don’t get the maximum monthly Social Security benefit. or anywhere near it, because it is somewhat of a theoretical number. That maximum benefit is only possible if your lifetime earnings for at least 35 years were more than each year’s annual payroll tax cap, a goal few can achieve. It’s much more likely that you’re closer to the average Social Security benefit, which is $1,661 in 2022, and that is only about 40% of the maximum possible monthly amount.
