As is generally known, the COVID-19 pandemic took a big toll on the American workforce, with many either forced to, or choosing to, leave their employment. Unemployment statistics jumped as the economy struggled to cope with lockdowns and strict rules imposed to deter the spread of the virus. Many businesses were shuttered, exacerbating the unemployment problem, a phenomenon which logic suggests would cause an increase in those who are eligible applying for their Social Security benefits. But although logic might imply that, it did not happen.
