A Differing Opinion About Social Security’s Future

In a post that offers a counter opinion regarding what many (most?) media reports label Social Security’s dismal financial prospects, Los Angeles Times Business Columnist Michael Hiltzik interprets the most recent Trustees Report as indicative of opportunity to “expand the program and increase benefits.” In his article, Hiltzik concedes that many pundits confirm the program’s insolvency trajectory, but suggests alternatively that not all voices agree that this trajectory excludes room for expansion beyond its current levls. “This discussion is really about politics and values, not about affordability,” Kiltzik quotes Eric Kingson, chairman and co-founder of the advocacy group Social Security Works.
