The Surge in COLA This Year Brought With It a Surge in Scammer Activity
Anthony Monaco, Special Agent in Charge of the Major Case Unit at the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, reports that their office has seen an upsurge in scammer complaints as a result of January’s extraordinary cost-of-living adjustment. The spike in complaints focused on beneficiaries receiving fraudulent letters advising them to contact a third party to “activate” their adjustment–the benefit increase that Social Security applies automatically without any intervention from recipients.
