Social Security is an extremely complex program, by its nature spawning many misconceptions about who is eligible for benefits, and when those benefits can begin. The rules surrounding Spousal benefits, in general, are some of the most difficult rules to understand, and that difficulty is exacerbated for divorced spouses, many of whom are entitled to benefits but do not know it, and many who think the are entitled to benefits but are not. Fact is, ex-spouses who were married for at least 10 years may be eligible for benefits from their former partner, but the rules are tricky. Remarriage can make an ex-spouse ineligible for benefits, except those surviving ex-spouses who remarry after age 60. Sound complicated?
