Social Security, Economic Stability, and the Relationship to Senior Women
A post today on the National Women’s Law Center website examines the role that Social Security benefits play in ensuring the financial support of women in their retirement years. Specifically, the article explains that while women comprise more than half of the roughly 67 million Social Security beneficiaries, their life expectancy on average exceeds those of males and their average monthly benefit lags males by about 24%. These statistics make it extremely important that the program serves as a financial fallback system to keep older females from slipping below the poverty level. On a broader level, the perils faced by women underscore the criticality of congressional action to deal with the looming Social Security solvency issue, something that seems to be continually subject to partisan rancor and can-kicking.
