Delay in “Payroll Information Exchange” Processes Questioned

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (MO-08), Social Security Subcommittee Chairman Drew Ferguson (GA-03), and Work and Welfare Subcommittee Chairman Darin LaHood (IL-16) recently raised questions regarding the “Payroll Information Exchange” (PIE) designed to improve the accuracy of certain payments processed through the  Social Security system. Approved for enactment as part of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, the Representatives noted in their July 31 letter to Acting SSA Commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi that continued delay in implementing the provisions is “surprising and unacceptable,” and requested, by August 14, an explanation for the delay, an accounting of steps that have been taken, and a timeline for full implementation of PIE.
