Challenges When Retiring Single
Maurie Backman explains the number of older Americans who are single continues to grow. CNN reports 16 million people 65 and over lived alone in 2022, 3x the number of Americans that age who lived alone in the 1960s. As baby boomers age, that number is expected to rise. Higher divorce rates and people who simply opt out of marriage and/or partnerships account for this in addition to others approaching retirement without a spouse, due to a death of a partner. The challenges are these: 1. access to only one set of Social Security benefits; 2. only a single nest egg to tap; and 3. No onsite caregiver. Full piece here.
