Representative Payee Designations Available to Help Seniors
Seniors struggling to manage their financial affairs have a helpful Social Security provision available to them that can ease their minds. It’s called the “Representative Payee” provision, and it allows a beneficiary to designate another person, usually a family member, someone close to the beneficiary, or a qualified organization to interact in an official capacity with the Agency. And here’s another important aspect of this provision: Beneficiaries can designate up to three individuals who could serve as payee for them if the need arises, so the availability of the service can be part of a beneficiary’s advance planning. As explained in the Social Security Administration’s publication, there are prescribed recordkeeping duties assigned to the designated individual or organization.
