Social Security’s “Clawback” Process and the Angst it Produces
To say that Social Security is complex is a clear understatement, and the myriad rules and potential for changes in beneficiary circumstances present a recipe for extremely uncomfortable situations. One such situation is the subject of an article appearing today on KFF Health News outlining how a Disability beneficiary came to receive a 30-day demand payment for more than $60,000.
The KFF Health News article, penned by David Hilzenrath (Washington Editor & Correspondent) and Cox Media Group’s Jodie Fleischer, dives into the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) history of handling improper benefit payments, citing several specific factors contributing to what is described as “an overpayment crisis.” One of the key factors noted is SSA’s much-discussed understaffing situation, although the complexity of the rules and the fact that many of the internal parameters are not inflation-adjusted play a critical role, the article also notes.
