The Timing of Initial Disability Benefits Explained
Once approved, initial claims for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits still have a time period to wait through until monthly payments begin to flow. As explained in a post on en.as.com by researcher Maite Knorr-Evans, this five-month delay is mandated by federal law as explained in the SSA publication titled “What You Need to Know When You Get Social Security Disability Benefits.” Ms. Knorr-Evans’ article also points out that “There is no waiting period if your disability arises due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and you get approved for SSDI benefits on or after July 23, 2020.”
