2025 COLA Watch–the Good and the Bad

The good news is that there’s likely to be a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security beneficiaries in January; the bad news is that it is expected to fall short of 2024’s 3.2% adjustment. But wait! That might not be bad news at all, since the parameters used to produce the final COLA figure would need a substantial uptick in consumer price indexes to produce a higher COLA. Read that to mean inflation, something that is quite damaging for everyone, especially seniors on otherwise fixed incomes. Besides that, larger COLAs tend to push beneficiaries into higher taxable income levels, an altogether different problem. The Motley Fool’s Maurie Backman offers additional perspective on the COLA matter in a post on their website which you can access here.
