Beware Different Ages if Coordinating Social Security & Medicare Signup

Maurie Backman notes that age 65 is a big milestone in retirement planning, as that’s when seniors are eligible to sign up for Medicare. In reality you can enroll in Medicare three months before the month of your 65th birthday to get the ball rolling. But signing up for Medicare in conjunction with Social Security is something people should consider carefully. It’s not always the best thing to do, as Social Security benefits will be reduced (full retirement age is 67). You can even hold off on Medicare if you have comparable employer coverage.
