“It’s your job to educate yourself…” - Dallas News; AMAC Foundation

Former Social Security Administration director of public information Tom Margenau, a 32-year veteran of various positions in the agency, has a direct style when answering questions — and complaints — about agency services. In media vernacular, he tells it like it is, as evidenced in a dallasnews.com post responding to questions about details a reader thought the agency should have explained more fully. To see this style in action, check out this post from yesterday discussing disability benefits and a few other reader questions.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with Margenau’s style (it can be refreshing at times), it’s important to remember that many of the arcane rules and regulations associated with Social Security can be daunting to those unfamiliar with government bureaucracy. That’s one of the main reasons why the AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory Service was implemented a decade ago. It’s a free service offered to the public that responds to about 500 calls for help each month, with a staff of trained, accredited Advisors ready to guide callers through Social Security’s many complexities.
