Scam Alert: Beware of SS Direct Deposit Offers with Prizes - Social Security Administration
It’s a dangerous online world we live in these days, with many scammers seeking to get at your Social Security benefits. The Inspector General (IG) of Social Security has issued a “Scam Alert” which warns of nefarious characters attempting to lure you into believing you’ve won some sort of contest, where your “prize” can only be direct deposited if you change your Social Security deposit information. The SSA Inspector General advises: DON’T FALL FOR IT! The IG regularly issues alerts about scams, such as this one which is especially dangerous for seniors who collect Social Security. This alert not only warns about how the scam works, but also tells you how to report it to both the Social Security Administration and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
