A Social Security Primer for Spouses

Safely ensconced near the top of the list of most frequently asked Social Security questions fielded by The AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory service is the category of spousal benefits, and that includes benefits for married spouses, as well as for ex-spouses. But, except for one very minor exception, the common denominator for all spouse benefits is this: you must take all Social Security benefits available to you when you claim – you cannot separate spousal benefits from your own SS retirement benefit.
