About Planning for your Social Security Claim - Motley Fool

When is the best time to claim Social Security? Sounds like a pretty simple question, doesn’t it? But there is no simple answer, other than “it depends.” When you should claim your Social Security benefit depends on a number of different factors which are specific to your personal circumstances, including how badly you need the money, how long you expect to live, if you are working, and whether you are married. You see, if you’re working full time you may not even be eligible to collect benefits until your earnings are less or you reach your full retirement age. And if you expect to enjoy a long life, waiting longer for a higher benefit may be the smart thing to do. Or if you’re married, spousal and potential survivor benefits should be considered too. There is no “one size fits all” best time to claim your Social Security benefits, as explained in this Motley Fool article by Selena Maranjian.

Also, if you’re unsure about how these basics apply to you, or if you have any questions about your individual situation under Social Security, note that the AMAC Foundation provides a free-to-the-public advisory service to help Americans navigate the complexities of this program. Learn more about it here…
