About Taxation of Social Security – Most States do not tax benefits - USA Today

There is a lot of media attention about income tax on Social Security benefits these days, what with Congress debating the possibility of eliminating Federal income tax on SS benefits (as President Trump has asked). But in all the hoopla about whether or not to eliminate Federal income tax on SS benefits, let’s not lose sight of the fact that most U.S. states do NOT tax Social Security benefits. And those which do usually provide some relief to lower income seniors. This very informative USA Today article by Selena Maranjian of the Motley Fool explains which U.S. states do not, and which states do, levy income tax on received Federal Social Security benefits.
