Addressing the Social Security and SSI Confusion - mecktimes.com
There seems to be considerable confusion surrounding the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and Social Security. Often, questions about Social Security benefit levels or eligibility rules incorrectly reference SSI, which is a totally unrelated program. In a post on the Mecklenburg Times website yesterday, Social Security Administration veteran official Tom Margenau reprises a well-worn article explaining the difference between the two.
Margenau’s article explains how confusion from misstating SSI as Social Security, and vice versa, can have consequences. As he points out, “If you use the wrong terms when asking questions, you’re going to get wrong answers.”
In the current spirit of Social Security terminology clarification (see today’s earlier post here), we’re sharing Margenau’s article. Check it out here.
