Americans are getting smarter about claiming Social Security

Though a majority of Americans still apply for Social Security before their full retirement age (between 66 and 67 depending on when you were born), recent polling data show that the percentage of folks planning to take benefits as soon as possible has declined dramatically.  This is good news, considering that applying early can mean a benefit reduction of as much as 30%, a big negative for those who will find Social Security to be a  very important segment of their retirement income.  This Motley Fool article by Maurie Backman discusses how more Americans are now making the right choice when it comes to applying for Social Security.  Click here to read more.
