An honest mistake with potentially huge consequences

What would you do if your opened your mail one day and found an application for Social Security benefits, complete with detailed personal information, that belonged to another person? And how would you feel when you realized that if you received someone else’s application by mistake, someone else probably also received yours, also complete with all your personal information? Well, that’s exactly what happened to a woman trying to get a new Social Security card, as reported by Samantha Miles of the Rochester (NY) 13WHAM (ABC) News. Fortunately in this case, both individuals were honest and no financial damage or identity theft occurred, but mistakes like this by the Social Security Administration are disconcerting to say the least and potentially financially disastrous to say the worst.
