If you receive a text, e-mail, or phone call saying it is someone from Social Security, odds are it’s a scam. Social Security will not initiate contact with you in these ways. Authentic Social Security Administration (SSA) contacts are almost always sent in a letter or a message in your My Social Security Account. Now you even have to be cautious with the letters you receive in the mail that claim to be from the SSA. If you receive a letter instructing you to contact Social Security, which requires a response, do not respond to the contact information provided in the letter. Call the SSA at 800-772-1213, and ask to be transferred to the SSA employee, department, or extension mentioned in the letter. If you have a My Social Security Account, check it to see if there is a message for you.
