Bernie Sanders’ Social Security Bill: Good intentions, but makes shortfall worse
Sen. Sanders of Vermont is out with a new bill on Social Security. Sean Williams of The Motley Fool summarizes the bill in this article. In short, the bill would significantly improve funding for offices and for the agency to hire more employees. Second, Sanders’ bill would eliminate certain waiting periods to receive disability benefits in addition to the two-year waiting period for beneficiaries to qualify for Medicare. Lastly, it would place a moratorium on the closure of Social Security field offices. But this bill does not address the long term funding crisis faced by Social Security, and in fact, Williams notes the shortfall would be made worse if this bill passed. Read the full article here.
The Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) advocates for a strengthening of Social Security and has developed a bipartisan compromise bill, titled “The Social Security Guarantee Act,” taking selected portions of bills introduced by Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Rep. John Larson (D-CT) and merging them with the Association’s original legislative framework to create the new Act.
