As Social Security Advisors, we often caution people that whenever they claim their Social Security benefit, the amount is permanent and will not change, except for Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). That’s generally true, but there actually are several ways that your benefit might change if certain events occur after your SS benefits start. Some of these events – such as COLA and high current earnings – will automatically cause an increase in your monthly payment, and others you’ll need to be aware of and ask for.
