Age 62 remains the most popular age at which Social Security benefits are claimed, but too often for the wrong reasons. Don’t misunderstand – there are some very good reasons why claiming Social Security before you reach your full retirement age makes a lot of sense. But there are just as many reasons why waiting could be an even smarter decision. The reality is, you have an eight year window during which you can apply for Social Security and the best time to claim within that window should be determined by looking at your entire personal situation – how badly do you need the money; are you in good health; are you still working; and do spouse benefits come into play?
