COLA’s Impact on SNAP Benefits…a Bit of a Challenge?

The 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) announced for January 2024 is certainly a welcomed boost for Social Security recipients. But as everyone knows, it only allows for catching up on price increases that have already happened, and the process as applied to Social Security beneficiaries, is somewhat discriminating since it undercompensates for categories of spending seniors typically face. Beyond that, however, the COLA bump can be a problem for folks drawing both Social Security benefits and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The additional Social Benefit can, and often does, detract from SNAP eligibility, as explained in a post by Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) appearing on the msmagazine.com website.
