Congress is demanding answers on the Social Security overpayment issue.
The Social Security Administration has recently been in the news for its clawback of over $20 billion in overpayments. Social Security sends clawback bills to beneficiaries that they believe were mistakenly overpaid for years or possibly decades. Laurence Kotlikoff, a noted expert on Social Security, states, “Unless a person has proof they were actively misled by Social Security Administration staff while filing for benefits, any Social Security overpayments or underpayments are the individual’s responsibility.” However, several Congressional members are calling for congressional hearings on the Social Security clawback issues and for the Social Security Administration to stop.
