Critical program strained by fraud and inefficiency

In a program as massive as Social Security, 100 percent efficiency is utterly impossible. A $17 billion hole is utterly unacceptable.  Nevertheless, a Social Security Administration inspector general’s report released last week showed that the agency has overpaid disability beneficiaries by that jaw-dropping figure over the last 10 years. Some of the people getting payments didn’t meet low-income thresholds for benefits. Some were still getting payments for temporary disabilities that had long since healed. Some were in prison.
